Mailchimp's Transactional MCP connects your AI assistant to Mandrill, Mailchimp's transactional messaging service. Paired with Giftronaut MCP, it lets you send a gift card and a custom transactional email or SMS in the same workflow, through your own authenticated sending domain.
Important: Mailchimp's MCP covers transactional messaging only. It does not connect to your Mailchimp marketing audiences, contact lists, or campaigns.
What this combination does
Giftronaut MCP handles the gift card — order creation, recipient management, and delivery. Mailchimp Transactional MCP handles a separate notification message sent through your own Mandrill account — a custom-branded email or SMS that you control independently of Giftronaut's delivery email.
Common workflows include:
- Sending a gift card and a personalized announcement email through your own domain in a single prompt
- Following up a gift card order with an SMS notification via your Mandrill SMS number
- Using your own transactional templates to set context before a gift arrives
Before you start
For Giftronaut MCP:
- A Giftronaut developer account
- At least one active app (sandbox or production)
- Giftronaut MCP connected to your AI client — see the Giftronaut MCP setup article
For Mailchimp Transactional MCP:
- A Mailchimp Transactional (Mandrill) account
- An API key with the AI Agents permission group enabled
- At least one authenticated sending domain
- An SMS number, if you plan to use SMS functionality
MCP server URL: https://mandrillapp.com/mcp
Authentication: Bearer token. When adding the server to your AI client, include your Mandrill API key as the Authorization header value. Unlike Giftronaut MCP, there is no browser sign-in flow — the key is added directly in your client configuration.
Setting up both MCPs
Connecting Mailchimp Transactional MCP
The exact steps depend on your AI client. In most setups:
- Add a new MCP server named
mailchimp-transactional(or similar). - Enter the server URL:
https://mandrillapp.com/mcp. - Add an
Authorizationheader with your Mandrill API key as the Bearer token. - Save and restart your client if needed.
- Confirm the connection: "Check my Mailchimp Transactional account status."
For client-specific instructions (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code), refer to the Mailchimp Transactional MCP setup guide on mailchimp.com/developer.
Confirming Giftronaut MCP
Confirm Giftronaut MCP is still working:
- "Check my Giftronaut balance."
- "List my most recent gift card orders."
Once both respond correctly, you are ready to run combined workflows.
What you can do
Send a gift card with a custom notification email
Use Giftronaut to send the gift card and Mailchimp Transactional to send a separate branded email from your own domain at the same time.
"Send a $50 choice card to dana@example.com through Giftronaut with the message 'You earned it.' Then send her a transactional email through Mailchimp from our sending domain with the subject 'Your recognition gift is on its way' and a short note that her gift card will arrive in a separate email shortly."
Pair a gift card with an SMS
If you have a Mandrill SMS number configured, you can notify a recipient by text at the same time as sending a gift card.
"Send a $25 Starbucks gift card to marcus@example.com through Giftronaut. Then send Marcus an SMS through Mailchimp Transactional to his number on file letting him know a gift card is coming his way."
Use a Mandrill template alongside a Giftronaut order
If you have pre-built transactional templates in Mandrill, reference them directly.
"Draft a $75 choice card for the 'New Hires' group in Giftronaut. At the same time, send each of them a transactional email using our 'Welcome Gift' template in Mailchimp Transactional."
Tips
Giftronaut already sends its own delivery email. The gift card notification Giftronaut sends is separate from anything you send through Mailchimp Transactional. Make sure your messaging to recipients is coordinated so they are not confused by two emails about the same gift.
Authenticate your sending domain first. Mailchimp Transactional will not send emails from an unverified domain. Complete domain authentication in your Mandrill account before running any combined workflows.
Use sandbox mode in Giftronaut while testing. Switch your Giftronaut app to sandbox so no real gift cards are sent while you work out the workflow. Note that Mailchimp Transactional does not have a built-in sandbox — emails sent through it will go to real addresses unless you test with internal addresses only.
FAQs
Can I use my Mailchimp marketing audience list to send Giftronaut gift cards?
No. The Mailchimp Transactional MCP does not have access to your Mailchimp marketing audiences or contact lists. It is limited to sending messages — not managing contacts.
Does the Mailchimp Transactional MCP work in AI clients other than Claude?
Yes. This is a standard MCP server and works in any MCP-compatible AI client, including Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code.
Where can I see activity from both tools?
Giftronaut MCP activity is logged in your Giftronaut request log dashboard. Mailchimp Transactional activity appears in your Mandrill account's activity log.
Can the AI assistant send emails on my behalf without me confirming?
Only if you ask it to. For safety, ask the assistant to draft or preview actions before executing them. You remain responsible for all messages sent through your connected accounts.
