Visa gift card fees vary by issuer, seller, card format, and load value. Purchase or activation fees commonly range from about $3 to $7 per card, with higher-value cards generally carrying higher fees. Some cards may also carry shipping, maintenance, replacement, or foreign transaction fees.
Giftronaut offers digital Visa options without the activation and shipping fees commonly associated with traditional gift cards. Our US and Canada Prepaid Visa cards have no activation, redemption, monthly maintenance, inactivity, or shipping fees. The Global Visa Reward Card also carries no fee on USD transactions.

What Fees Do Traditional Visa Gift Cards Charge?
Visa does not set one standard fee for every gift card. Fees are determined by the card issuer, seller, card value, and individual card terms.
| Fee type | Typical cost or condition |
|---|---|
| Purchase or activation fee | Commonly about $3–$7 per card |
| Shipping fee | May apply to physical cards ordered online or in bulk |
| Monthly or maintenance fee | May apply after a period of inactivity, depending on the card |
| Replacement fee | May apply if a physical card is lost or stolen |
| Foreign transaction fee | Usually a percentage of the transaction and varies by issuer |
| Currency-conversion fee | May apply when a purchase is made in another currency |
Purchase, activation, and shipping fees are generally charged when the card is purchased. Maintenance, replacement, and foreign transaction fees may apply later depending on how and where the card is used.
Always review the cardholder agreement before purchasing a Visa gift card because fees and restrictions vary by issuer.
How Much Is the Activation Fee on a Visa Gift Card?
Visa gift card activation or purchase fees commonly range from about $3 to $7 per card. The exact amount depends on the card's value, format, issuer, and retailer.
Because the fee is usually charged per card, it can add up quickly for bulk orders. For example, a $5 fee on each of 100 gift cards adds $500 to the total purchase cost without increasing the value recipients receive.
Do Giftronaut Visa Gift Cards Have Fees?
Giftronaut's US and Canada Prepaid Visa cards do not charge recipients activation, redemption, monthly maintenance, inactivity, or shipping fees.
| Fee | Giftronaut US & Canada Prepaid Visa |
|---|---|
| Activation fee | None |
| Redemption fee | None |
| Monthly or maintenance fee | None |
| Inactivity fee | None |
| Shipping fee | None—cards are delivered digitally |
| Giftronaut platform fee | None |
| Credit card funding fee | 3% |
| ACH or wire funding fee | None |
The 3% credit card funding fee applies only when the sender deposits account funds by credit card. It is separate from the Visa card and is not deducted from the recipient's balance.
Where Can US and Canada Prepaid Visa Cards Be Used?
Each Giftronaut Prepaid Visa card is issued for one country:
- US Prepaid Visa — issued in USD and usable only within the United States, including Washington, DC.
- Canada Prepaid Visa — issued in CAD and usable only within Canada.
The recipient's country of residence does not change where the card can be used. A recipient living in Canada could receive a US card, for example, but the card would still work only for eligible transactions within the United States.
Recipients can use the card online by entering the virtual card number, expiration date, and CVV. They can also add it to a compatible mobile wallet, such as Apple Pay or Google Wallet, for in-store purchases where contactless prepaid Visa payments are accepted.
US and Canada Prepaid Visa cards are single-load, non-reloadable cards. They expire six months after issuance or when the balance reaches $0, whichever occurs first.
What Fees Apply to the Global Visa Reward Card?
For recipients who need a card with broader international coverage, Giftronaut offers the Global Visa Reward Card. It is issued in USD and can be used at participating Visa merchants in more than 190 countries and territories.
| Fee | Global Visa Reward Card |
|---|---|
| Issuance fee | None |
| Monthly or inactivity fee | None |
| USD transaction fee | None |
| Non-USD international transaction fee | 3% |
| Non-USD foreign-exchange fee | 3% |
| Total fee on non-USD transactions | 6% of the transaction amount |
The 3% international transaction fee and 3% foreign-exchange fee apply only when a recipient makes a purchase in a non-USD currency.
See International Visa Gift Cards for supported countries, card limits, expiration, and transaction restrictions.
How Do I Send a Visa Gift Card Through Giftronaut?
You can send a Visa gift card in two ways:
- Branded Gift Card — Select the recipient country and choose Visa as the brand when placing the order. This option is best when you know whether the recipient needs a US or Canada card.
- Giftronaut Choice Card — Let the recipient choose an available brand and country from their catalog during redemption. This option is better for mixed or international recipient groups.
To place an order:
- From your Giftronaut dashboard, select Place an Order → One-Time Order. For recurring sends, select Smart Order.
- Choose Branded Gift Card or Choice Card.
- If sending a Branded Gift Card, select the recipient country and choose Visa.
- Set the reward amount and add recipients individually or by spreadsheet upload.
- Choose Send now or Schedule, review the order, and select Send and Confirm.
How Do Recipients Redeem and Use the Card?
Recipients receive their Visa gift card by email and can redeem it within a few minutes.
After completing redemption, the recipient can view the virtual card number, expiration date, and CVV. These details can be entered at online checkout or added to a compatible mobile wallet for in-store purchases.
For step-by-step instructions, see Redeeming a Visa Gift Card.
